An old timber walking bridge that used to cross from The Marrickville Golf Club across to Beaman Park in Earlwood has been dismantled in April 2016. Wildwood Designs, Sydney based furniture craftsmen are proud to have secured most of the old timber on this bridge.
A new bridge is now in its place but Wildwood Designs are very excited to have lots of this incredible old hardwood to be creative with and make amazing furniture. “Australian hardwoods are the toughest and heaviest in the world and making furniture from this unique timber is what we love to do.” says Juliet Barr of Wildwood Designs.
“Juliet and I have quite a connection with this bridge as we used it nearly every day to take our pets and children for walks around the golf course. When we found out the bridge was being replaced Juliet created a special OLD BRIDGE ART PRIZE with the Marrickville Golf club in 2014 with the Bridge as the theme.” says Pete Crutchfield of Wildwood Designs.
Juliet says, “Then several years later when we got the okay to salvage the timber as the bridge was coming down. This deconstruction was quite a mammoth effort with a crane on a barge being anchored into the river to balance the weight of the timber being removed. Pete reckons had a bad back for a week or two after helping with the deconstruction and removal process. That wood weighs so much!”
At the moment the first table made from this old bridge is at our Gladesville showroom. It is made of old blue gum beams. There will be other furniture made from lighter hardwoods in the mix. We have given it a modern black refectory base and it is seen here with our retro black leather chair.
There will be many more pieces of unique furniture to come which Juliet will add to this blog as they roll out.
